1st May.
This morning I walked around Rossall Point to view the rock stars of
Fleetwood. I saw 5 lorries queuing with their heavy loads waiting to be
unloaded.
A recreation field has been appropriated to store the rocks before being
individually moved into position on the beach. This rock will make new groynes
to replace the old wooden boards.
• Wyre Council has secured over £40 million of funding from the
Environment Agency for the current major coastal defence project, the Wyre
Beach Management Scheme.
• Beach works started here at the end of April 2024 and will be complete
by summer 2025.
• Limestone rock is from Carnforth and the granite is from Shap in
Cumbria.
• The rocks range in weight from 3 to 10 tonnes – and are about 4 feet
(1.2m) in diameter.
• Rocks are also used to help protect existing sea walls. Buried beneath
the sand, the rock armour helps stop the sea from gouging out under the sea
walls which might otherwise cause the sea wall to collapse leading to
flooding.
