NO CAR PARKING FOR THE STAFF!
1,500 staff to use this building (as stated in Design & Access statement) and no car parking for staff. I find that unacceptable and a strong reason to object, as I have.
1. Not everyone has good access to bus and trams (think of villagers for example).
2. Public transport isn't always good for disabled people and there is NO disabled parking provided with this application.
3. There will be days when bad weather, engineering works, and industrial disputes make public transport unavailable.
4. There will be a couple of dozen parking spaces retained from the existing car park, but there will be a net loss of existing car parking spaces.
5. There is no guarantee that existing car parking facilities will prevail.
5a. The plan was drawn up with an assumption that the Wilkinson car park would still be there, and this has had to be worked (dubiously imo) into a table of other car parking facilities in the town centre.
5b. Parking spaces off East Topping Street will be lost to the development.
5c. Parking spaces at the rear of the Houndshill Shopping Centre will be lost to the new Wilkinson & cinema complex.
In conclusion, there is an over-reliance on public transport and too much dependency on existing and transient car parking. There is a great clash of shops versus workers versus tourists all clamouring for car parking. Workers will grab car parking spaces before the shoppers try to come in. They'll find it difficult to park, and gradually tail away from shopping in the town. To assist the complex situation, I believe that all new developments should include an element of car parking for the building's users within their development footprint. For 1500 staff, I would suggest that at least 35-50% of them should have a parking space at the new offices.
